Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

Teaching drawing and painting has shown me that art transcends language—its foundations are universal, and its metaphors speak across cultures. My philosophy begins with empathy, patience, and adaptability, recognizing that every student enters the studio with different strengths, goals, and uncertainties. I emphasize strong fundamentals: understanding value, developing hand-to-eye coordination, working from life, and drawing every day. Studying the old masters and maintaining a sketchbook are essential practices that help students build discipline, refine their vision, and learn to observe the world with clarity and intention.

I believe that technical mastery should support personal expression. My role is to guide students as they discover what they want to communicate and how to use visual language effectively. I teach the core elements--form, color, and composition—while encouraging independence, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of “why,” not just “what” and “how.” Art history provides essential context, placing students in dialogue with those who came before them and helping them understand their place within the broader spectrum of art. Above all, I strive to create a supportive environment where experimentation is valued, growth is continuous, and students feel empowered to develop an authentic artistic voice.

Always humbled and proud of the dedication my students put into their work:

 Testimonial example:

Hi again, Cassandra,

Asem is prepared for each class, often bringing handouts to help us understand concepts. For example, before we set up the paint on our palettes, he showed us how different masters had arranged their palettes using historical references. He treats us like serious art students and has planned a curriculum and homework to cover an ambitious agenda. We have bonded as a small class and have responded well to the demands placed on us. Among ourselves, we have discussed how great it is to have a teacher who actually teaches, and how we are energized by the expectations he places on us.  It's challenging, LOVING IT! I just signed up again.

Best,
Sheryl
